~ Measurements ~

Take measurements to compare to our size charts located with each item - the correct size chart is provided on each item's feature page based on that manufacturer's standards.   Do not simply order the size you choose in ready to wear from stores - sizes vary widely between manufacturers.

Suggestions for measuring:

  • Use a non-stretching measuring tape.
  • Measure over the underwear only - the unerwear intended to be worn under this garment.
  • Take measurements firmly, but do not indent.
  • Waist is approximately just above the top of the 'belly button'.
  • Compare actual measurements to the chart.
  • Children's sizes are for pre-puberty and do not accommodate a developing figure.  Once development has begun, select a size from the Jr. Miss/Misses dress selections.
  • Do not measure over your thumb or fingers - do not add "growth" or ease - the manufacturer adds this for you.
  • The width measurement that demands the largest size is the measurement that determines size.  If the child does not fit a specific size well, order the largest size dictated by any one measurement.
  • Alterations can be done locally at your discretion.  Some dresses can now be ordered with a special sizing option, which is cut-to-measure.
  • If the intended wearer is especially tall for the size determined by width on the size charts, consider selecting a dress that comes in formal length.  Some dresses are now available with added length.

*It is actually best to measure waist length on her back.  It helps to place a necklace around her neck - where it falls against the backbone in back is where you begin measuring down for waist length.  Bodice length is often called back length or neck-to-waist length. You can also measure dress length from this starting point down the back as well.

LENGTH DEFINITIONS:    (length can vary by style, the wearer's proportions and even posture)

    • Tea Length is roughly mid-calf
    • Waltz length is longer - closer to the upper ankle.
    • Formal length is intended to graze the lower edge of the ankle.
    • Floor length should just miss the floor - take this measurement in the shoes she will be wearing!.

    Please do NOT ~

    • Order the size you typically purchase in the store without taking measurements and comparing to the chart.
    • Attempt to "fake out" measurements such as trying to fit a child larger than the largest size offered.
    • Order a larger size or two to get a formal or floor length on a dress that comes tea length.  This usually does not work out satisfactorily, and we can do nothing about it if you are displeased
    • If a girl is "budding" into puberty, she no longer belongs in children's sizing.  Please do not try to force a dress to fit a maturing figure - you will be disappointed and we cannot be held accountable for the fact that it will not hang properly. Instead, select a dress from the Jr. Miss/Misses categories.

NOTE:  Plus sizing is for a wider, heavier girl - not for a blossoming young lady.
